The New York Giants' fire sale continued this week as less than 24 hours after trading away cornerback Eli Apple to the Saints, they have reportedly traded defensive tackle Damon Harrison to the Detroit Lions for one of their fifth-round draft picks in 2019, reports ESPN, which was first with the pending transaction.
Harrison, who turns 30 next month, was acquired by the Giants in 2016 as part of a massive free-agency spend to beef up the defense. The former Jets defender inked a five-year, $46.2 million deal with the Giants and continued to establish himself year in and year out as one of the best run defenders in the league.
Although he has never missed a start for the Giants, Harrison’s talents were pretty much contained toward stopping the run rather than being an every-down player.
The decision to move on from Harrison now shows the Giants are committed to a full roster rebuild. Although Harrison hasn’t shown a decline in his skills, he is still a part of a Giants run defense that, after peaking at No. 3 in the league in 2016 (tied with the Patriots), finished 27th last year and which is currently 20th this season.

Harrison carries a $9.6 million cap figure this year, which included a $7.75 million base salary (of which $2.5 million was fully guaranteed). The Giants will recoup approximately $4,558,823 on their 2018 cap with the transaction, having more than satisfied their payout of the $2.5 million salary that was guaranteed.
They will also have an additional $3.2 million of dead money added to their already growing dead money total for 2019, that $3.2 million representing the final two prorated installments of Harrison’s signing bonus, which was to run through 2020.
